The skinny on West Virginia


West Virginia will enter Saturday’s home game against No. 3 Kansas (15-2; 3-1) sporting an overall record 6-11 and just 1-3 in the Big 12. This season, the Mountaineers have stumbled to a 6-5 record at home.

West Virginia has failed to win a game outside of WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers are 0-2 in true road games and 0-4 in neutral site games.

On January 13, West Virginia emerged victorious for the first time in conference play by defeating No. 25 (Ranking at the time) Texas. In defeating the Longhorns inside WVU Coliseum, four players, Patrick Suemnick (16), Kerr Kriisa (14), RaeQuan Battle (14), and Quinn Slazinski (13) scored in double-digits for the Mountaineers

As a team, West Virginia shot 21-of-47 (44.7%) from the field, 7-of-17 from behind the arc, and 27-of-41 (65.9%) from the free-throw line.

West Virginia won the battle on the glass, 32-31, dished out 111 assists, committed 15 turnovers, blocked two shots, and finished the game with 10 steals.

After defeating Texas in Morgantown, West Virginia, on Wednesday night, fell to No. 15 Oklahoma, 77-63 in Norman, Oklahoma.

Kansas plays its first of three ESPN Big Mondays for the 2023-24 season when it hosts new Big 12 member on Jan. 22. Tip from Allen Fieldhouse will be at 8 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN. At halftime of the contest, Kansas will be retiring the jersey of Bill “Skinny” Johnson who played at KU from 1931-33 and is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the College Basketball Hall of Fame.

In a series that dates back to 1949, Kansas leads the all-time series with Cincinnati, 4-3. The series is tied at 1-1 in games played in Lawrence. The teams last met on Dec., 4, 1996, at the Great Eight in Chicago, resulting in a 72-65 KU win.
