Cincinnati slips past West Virginia, 90-85, in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament
On Tuesday afternoon, Cincinnati, the No. 11 seed in the Big 12 Tournament, slipped past West Virginia, the No. 14 seed, 90-85. The Mountaineers led the Bearcats by 16 points, 64-48, with 11:45 left in the game, but stumbled down the stretch inside T-Mobile Center.
In advancing to face Kansas, the No. 6 seed on Wednesday night, Cincinnati was led by Simas Lukosius (31), Day Day Thomas (29), and Dan Skillings, Jr., (13). The Bearcats connected on 29-of-65 (44.6%) of their field goals, 16-of-38 (42.1%) of their shots from behind the arc, and 16-of-21 (76.2%) of their free throws.
Cincinnati scored 14 points off of nine West Virginia turnovers, won the battle on the glass, 36-32, scored 13 second-chance points, scored eight points off the bench, tallied 20 points in the paint, added nine fastbreak points, blocked two shots, finished with four steals, dished out 17 assists to just eight turnovers, and led for close to 19 minutes.
A look back at the regular season showdown between Kansas and Cincinnati:
On January 22, Kansas defeated Cincinnati, 74-69, inside Allen Fieldhouse. In moving to 16-3 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12, the Jayhawks were led by Johnny Furphy (23), Kevin McCullar, Jr. (20), KJ Adams, Jr. (11), and Hunter Dickinson (10).
Tied 35-35 at the half, Kansas outscored Cincinnati, 39-34, in the second half and made just enough plays down the stretch to hold off the Bearcats. Bill Self’s squad led Cincinnati by 10 points with 2:02 left in the game, but the Bearcats managed to cut the deficit to five points, 72-67, with 12 seconds left in the game.
Elmarko Jackson, who was fouled with 10 seconds remaining on the clock, calmly stepped to the free-throw line and drilled two of the biggest free-throws of the game. Jizzle James scored with a handful of seconds left on the clock, which pulled Cincinnati to within five points of Kansas, but as the final seconds ticked off the clock, Self’s squad emerged victorious, 74-69.
Kansas, without the services of Kevin McCullar, Jr., and Hunter Dickinson, will have to play its best game of the season to sweep Cincinnati on Wednesday night. In the first meeting, the Bearcats won the battle on the glass, 40-29, which will be a big area of focus in the rematch.
Without McCullar, Jr., and Dickinson, Bill Self, during his weekly appearance on Hawk Talk earlier in the week, indicated that Dajuan Harris, Elmarko Jackson, Johnny Furphy, Nicolas Timberlake, and KJ Adams, Jr., would likely take the court against Cincinnati to start Wednesday's nightcap.
