Many fans are bemoaning a lack of three point snipers in our recruiting. However, based on the players being brought in and Self's comments, it appears he was more concerned about athleticism, length, and defense. Sure, 38% seems better than 31% on 3P%, but if that +7% comes with -3 inches in height, -5 inches in reach, and below average defense and driving ability, it is a net negative.
We recruited stars with stats in the past and tried to fit them into our system, square peg - round hole, it didn't work.
I believe Peterson, Dawson, Council, and White are complete players that shoot well enough to keep defenses honest. However, they are going to be massive upgrades on defense, attacking off the dribble, getting to the free throw line, and playing with attitude. Perimeter defense was a struggle at times in the past, I think this team is going to be lock down. Shortest guy on the team is 6'3", Shelby and Jackson. Dawson, Council, and McDowell check in at 6'4".
We really don't need Jackson, McDowell and Shelby all to be major contributors, there likely aren't enough minutes. If Jackson can be part of the regular rotation and Shelby provides some timely shooting that may be all the minutes we have available, If McDowell can earn minutes, more power to him. If we can add Stokes to this squad we will have four guys on the floor almost all the time that can hit the three and four guys on the floor that can create off the dribble and get to the rim.
We just need to find another big man that is willing to be a part of this group, without having to be focal point.
