A lot has been written about this lately and to many the cause was the housing crisis that led to our recent recession and the loss of all kinds of jobs. IMO the fault lies squarely on the shoulders of our elected in Washington. Why-because this decline in the middle class started in the 70's but we were so prosporous that nobody care or did anything. Are the elected there to govern by the crrent hour and not for the future, Up until the 70's "union" type jobs as well as white collar midele management. Then a recession hit the east coast and through the 80's hit one part of the country and then another on down the line. The "rust belt" was never the same and never recovered. What mfg jobs there were went to right to work states. In the 80's companies laid off their entire middlet managemnt levelp employees and they never came back. In the early 90's Clinton started the inll fated every person gets a house plan. This period of prosperity plus the rise of the dot com maksed a growing problem. The baby boomers pushed their kids though college at huge debts on the promise of job. We know where that is now. The dot com bust followed by the bursting of the housing bubble unmasked the true problem of the disappearing middle class. Finally the shit hit the fan throughout 2008 and hasn't stopped. Through it all our federal government has been totally inept with the exceptttttions of propping up the stock market and forcing states to extend unemployment-both ofwhich have been done with borrowed dollars. Throw in some wars fought by underpaid troops and, quite frankly, our government leaders, regardless of party, have let us down, and have mortaged not managed all of our futures. I don't see any leaders on the horizons that can turn this thing around or least of all stop it. They just try to tax and/or regulate us into properity. And while all of this was going on our education system was slwoing (or rapidly) becoming antiquated in a global workplace. Happy 2014.
