Quick Take: I said for a while the staff would be looking for a kicker and punter through the transfer portal.

They found their punter in Damon Greaves from Australia.

Greaves grew up playing Australian Rules Football. The last team he played for was Hawthorn and he told them last November he was leaving their program to either focus on a college scholarship or the NFL.

He told one of the publications that covers AFL the following:

“The opportunity to live in another Country, to enjoy new experiences and receive a free education, was a hard one to pass on. This is a new sport, that will come with new challenges, however I'm very excited about the opportunity.”

Greaves did his work with Pro Kick Australia, who is the premier program that places punters in division one football. I had a chance to communicate with Greaves and he is pumped to have this opportunity.

Breakdown: There is no film, information, or stats for Greaves as a punter. But I heard the Kansas coaches have a connection to Pro Kick Australia and they get to watch film on the players from workouts and practices.

The credit here goes a lot to KU special teams analyst Aaron Miller. He has had success with Pro Kick and been around good punters. Before Miller arrived at Kansas he was at Rutgers. They signed Adam Korsak from Australia, who just won the Ray Guy Award for Rutgers this year. Before that Miller was at Ohio State where they had Drue Chrisman, who was a finalist for the Ray Guy Award.

Miller has connections at Pro Kick. The Ray Guy Award has been awarded to six punters who came through the Pro Kick Australia program. This is the place you go when you are looking for punters.

I have heard he booms the ball on film in workouts and came highly recommended by Prokick.

What this means: I think this closes the book on special teams. They got their kicker in Seth Keller who will be on scholarship. They also got a PWO in Charlie Weinrich, who was at Blue Valley before going to Nebraska.

I don’t know what this means for the current specialists on the roster and what they have been told about their status moving forward.
