One of my liberal "friends" believes that the lack of political compromise is due to gerrymandering. The theory that he shared is that both parties gerrymander their districts so that they've got a more politically homogenous population that will make it easier for them to get elected. The political homogenous gerrymandering elects candidates that are rewarded for representing a narrow viewpoint and punished via elections for compromise with opposing viewpoints. Therefore gerrymandering leads to political polarization and lack of compromise. Sounds like a reasonable theory but I'd like your opinions.
