South Dakota was the first state to replace Columbus Day with Native Americans Day in 1989. A number of other states have joined us in this celebration. Columbus had no idea where he was when his voyage land in what is now known as St Croix island in the Caribbean. He promptly slaughtered many of those already there and enslaved many others. That memory can’t be whitewashed - pun intended - by those seeking to rewrite our history as bland pablum.
