Here's my first team All-Big 12 team (stats thru March 2):
Perry Ellis - Before last night he was tied for 5th in scoring (14.5 ppg) and 4th in rebounding (7.2 rpg). His stats in conference play are actually a little better (15.8 ppg and 7.6 rpg) which put him 3rd in both categories when looking at conference games only. His FG% in conference play ranks 3rd as well at 50.5%.
Georges Niang - 15.1 ppg (5th); 5.4 rpg; and 3.34 assists/game. In conference play only, he's averaging 14.7 ppg and 5.4 ppg.
Buddy Hield - 17.3 ppg (1st) and 5.4 rpg. In conference play he's averaging 18.5 ppg and 5.7 rpg.
Rico Gathers - 11.4 ppg and 11.8 rpg (1st). In conference play he's averaging 11.5 ppg and 11.8 rpg.
Juwan Staten - 14.5 ppg (5th) and 4.63 apg (2nd). In conference play he's averaging 13.1 ppg and 5 apg.
I tend to favor players from the top teams in the league. A player from a bottom half team needs to be pretty damn special to make my first team. I don't think Nash or Forte (whose play has dropped off recently) make the cut in my book. I also like players that elevate their game in conference play but it's not a hard fast rule for me.
For those interested, Nash is currently averaging 16.9 ppg (2nd in the league) and 5.4 rpg. In conference play he's averaging 16.3 ppg but isn't in the top 20 in rebounding.
Forte is averaging 15.6 ppg (3rd). In conference play he's averaging 14.6 ppg.
For conference player of the year (POY), I think it will be Hield.
I suspect coach of the year (COY) will go to either Drew or Huggins. I'd probably give my vote to Huggins. The guy freaking reinvented his team this year and got them to play harder than pretty much everyone in this league.
What say you?
