New Zealand is testing using a wellbeing index instead of basing decisions off gross domestic product. The theory is, GDP measures, essentially, income and doesn't account for actual well being of the population. The Wellbeing, or Happiness, Index is better for that and will take into account a fuller range of the health and vitality of the population.
Personally, while I'm sure there are being some growing pains, I'm a fan. The more we can get away from valuing things strictly in short-term economic terms the better we'll be as a nation.
