Who are the coaches you think will be most important in turning this around at KU?
I think many would argue OC and DC because they are running the offense and defense, which would make sense, but the more I think about it I think the two biggest coaches will be Yenzer and Je'Ney Jackson...
Just looking at the results from KU's pro day, KU had the athletes to put together a solid offense last year. Things did improve under Kiesau and we looked like a legit offense at times under him, but this offense should have been better than what it was. Perhaps the biggest thing that held back the offense last year was inconsistent offensive line play. Hard to blame Reagan on this because he had to deal with a lot of moving parts and didn't have time to develop the guys he needed for the OL to be better, but I think this was the part of offense that was lacking at times last year.
Now with this new offense of getting the ball out quickly, there may not be as much importance in OL play. However, with things like implementing more of a QB run game, I still think it will be very important.
So far, we have seen Yenser focus on guys like McCauley, Frazier, and Durley. These guys are going to need to be built up (with Durley being a little bit of an exception - I think he is going to be a stud). It sounds like these are the type of tackle prospects Yenser prefers - these are guys he wants to build up and mold into the type of OL he wants - from physically to technically speaking. The physical part is going to come from Je'Ney Jackson. The technical part is going to come from Yenser. If he can accomplish this, with the pieces he is putting together, the OL will be solid...and will also mean Yenser is a keeper and we need to pay this guy. If not, I do think the offense will struggle at times because of poor OL play.
I think you can point to any position coach and claim how important they will be and there will be some truth to that...but I think Yenser and Jackson will play the largest role in this turn around initially...
