Let's rally up here.
I'm one of the biggest kool aid drinkers here. I exert much effort to defend players/coaches because I can imagine how hard their job is and the risk we won't see wins and stats even if they are giving 150%. I'm patient.
But I'm not 7 years patient. That iconic picture of Zenger and high $ donors looking pissed off at a late season Turner Gill game was 5 years ago. That was supposed to be the low point.
To me, today very much appears to be a "I knew it wasn't going to work out when..." game. I don't want that to be. I very much like David Beaty. I like Clint Bowen. I like Zenger.
But I can't see any excuse for the first half. None. Zero. Great effort to get some points on the board after that, but it was over at 25-0. Hell, FCS Charleston Southern with 25% of their team suspended put out a better offensive performance against a top 10 team in their first half.
Is this going to be the "I knew it wasn't going to work out when..." game? I'm willing to be talked off the ledge. But I don't want to hear "team is young, Beaty is having to clean up Weis' mess, blah blah blah" bullshit. He's been on the job 21 months. He's accumulated the talent and has had time to develop key players. That's not enough team for a coach to build Kansas to a middle of the pack P5 team, but it's enough time to put out a far better performance than we saw today.
I watched Mangino win few games in 2002, but saw this is different. Same with Mason in '88 and Snyder in '89. I'm not feeling anything close to that right now.
I'm more than happy to eat crow and admit I'm an idiot (I'll do that in advance...I'm an idiot!). I do respect the time and effort coaches and players are spending to put the product out on the field. I know what they do isn't easy by any means.
But today was bad. I don't think it's hyperbole to say this is like once in a decade bad. 2010 North Dakota State? OK...if that doesn't work out, can hire a new coach. 2012 Louisiana Tech? OK, we're cleaning up T-Gill's mess. But today? I don't know. I don't know.
