I spent most all my time focusing on the OL the whole practice. One reason is I get the feel there are a lot of combinations that can happen. There could be a lot of shifting around. I have been told Agpalsa has a similar philosophy with Fuchs about cross-training OL and making sure they can play other positions.
First I want to start with two players I am hearing have looked good in early practices that don't get a lot of mentions. Nolan Gorczyca and Dre Doiron. I heard Gorczyca started to show signs of improving last fall and carried them through the start of spring practice. I watched him for a while today and he is a big dude. I was within a few feet of the OL and physically there are few OL with his frame.
I heard Doiron is getting a lot of reps at center. But I still expect that battle to come down to Bumgardner and Ford for now. Last fall I thought Doiron looked lean but he has put on some weight and is bigger.
Bumgardner drew praise from Agpalsa today on a few reps.
Going into the offseason my money was on Calvin Clements to win the job at LT. Now those odds are different after hearing Logan Brown is stepping up. Brown is athletic. Both he and Clements look like Big 12 tackles. When they get off the bus you would certainly notice them.
When the pads were popping today the two guys I thought were moving their defenders were Darrell Simmons and Kobe Baynes. Simmons is a wide body and he is strong. You can tell he is more developed than some guys but I have to step back and realize he's been in Iowa State's program for several years. He has been developed as much as any OL in KU's program from a physical standpoint.
Brown also got some reps at right tackle. That is big because they need a "swing" tackle who can move positions. One of my concerns was the backup to Cabeldue because right now I don't know that there is one. It was Armaj and I don't know that they wanted to use him except an emergency.
Agpalsa got on Livingston a couple times to correct his technique and blocking. He was working at right tackle.
Just a little recruiting info.... Anderson Kopp and Brock Heath were watching the OL drills.
