I wouldn't necessarily say that we have the right guys to run this offense, but of the guys we have this style may actually be the best fit for them.
The past couple of years I think many of us have wanted to shorten the games by having the ball as long as possible. Because we weren't as talented as some other teams, this made sense. It was kind of like we were hoping to not lose by as much when you think about it versus winning out right.
Now I don't think that is necessarily a bad way to look at that, but do think if you want to have some success doing that you need a deep set of RBs and OL. I am not sure we have that right now.
Putting skill guys aside, while just stating I do think those guys can run this system (while again saying we may not have the optimal skill set guys for this offense just yet, in particular when I think about this offense I think about the OL and QB for this group.
I am not expecting this group of OL to be maulers. But in this type of offense they don't have to be. What they do have to be is be in shape and be disciplined. I think Je'Ney is taking care of the first part, let's hope Yenser can take care of the last part. Now in terms of pass protection, these guys will be asked to hold for a short period of time - this can mask sole decencies in the OL...
Now with QB, for discussions sake let's assume Cozart is the guy. With him, I think the three biggest complaints in general about him are pocket presence, making quick decisions, and the deep pass. In this offense; pocket presence and deep passes are masked some because of how quick some of these plays are ran. The big key will be with decision making, where Likens will have to make sure that he designs the offense, coaches the offense, and selects the plays that best put Cozart in a spot to succeed.
At the end of the day, I think we could see the offense improve in terms of efficiency. There will be some people that get frustrated because we have three and outs while running little to no time off the clock. But given what we have, this style of offense may just fit the guys we have better than other types of offenses because of the offenses ability to mask some of our deficiencies...
