Something that I go back and forth on is this whole idea of a new coach bringing in his guys to get things turned around in a situation like KU. I can see some truth in it, but also think it gets used as an excuse way too often. What are your thoughts on it?

It does make some sense to me. If you are planning on bringing in a wholesale change scheme wise for either offense or defense, you likely need new blood into the program to run it.

But at the same time, if a kid can play, isn't it the coaches job to put them in a spot to succeed? Furthermore, if you are a good coach you likely have an ego - wouldn't that ego tell you that you can do a better job coaching a specific player or unit better than the previous coach?

I look back at the Weis years and one thing Weis did was essentially have the roster full of new blood within a couple of years. Within a couple of years, the majority of the kids on the roster was recruited by Weis. That being said, the three guys that were drafted this past year were essentially Gill recruits (noting that McDonald was re-recruited by Weis and Shepherd moved to CB under Weis).

Looking forward to the Beaty era, I think we need a healthy mix here. Because of the roster situation, we will take 25 guys in each recruiting class for at least the next 3 years. That's 75 guys. Combine that with what was taken in the last class and the roster will soon be full of Beaty guys. At the same time, I think a lot of potential success from this new staff will have to be to do a better job of coaching guys/units better than the previous staff did.
