Hey all,
We've reached a point in the year where prospects from the 2023 class have already officially visited Kansas, have scheduled an official visit to Kansas, or will do so in the near future. Currently, Taison Chatman (6/25/22), Mikey Williams (6/27/22), and Chris Johnson (7/25/22) have officially visited Kansas. At this time, five-star big man Dennis Evans is scheduled to officially visit Kansas the weekend of Late Night in the Phog.
With Chris Johnson already on board, I think that it's safe to say that, in terms of bringing in another guard, the top priority remains Mikey Williams, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound point guard from San Ysidro High School in San Diego, Calif. Currently, at least the last time I checked, Williams, the No. 19 ranked player in the 2023 class, hasn't scheduled any additional official visits since his visit to Kansas in late June. Due to the fact that Williams doesn't conduct interviews with the media and nobody around him talks, it's tough to get a true feel for where things stand. However, I've been told by a source that Kansas is, without question, a "major player" for Mikey. Coach Kurtis Townsend has done an amazing job recruiting Mikey and has been on the No. 6 ranked point guard in the class from the very beginning.
Obviously, I know some of you have asked about Taison Chatman, the 6-foot-3, 175-pound shooting guard from Totino Grace High School in Fridley, Minn., since Chris Johnson committed to Kansas earlier in the week. At this time, I really don't see anything happening with Kansas. From what I've been told, I think it's safe to say Bill Self and his staff will focus on a select group of prospects in the 2023 class and then hit the portal.
I spent a lot of time talking to Johnson after he committed, and, on a number of occasions, he mentioned how many young guys Kansas has on its roster. He also said that he was going to help recruit a few guys and is going to do his best to make sure Kansas signs a great class.
With Johnson already on board and Williams and Evans very much in play, I think there are a few guys left on the board that the staff would love to bring in for a visit. Kaden Cooper, the 6-foot-6, 180-pound small forward from The Skill Factory Prep in Atlanta, Ga., has indicated that he would like to visit Kansas, but nothing has been scheduled at this time. Cooper, the No. 36 ranked player in the class, has over 30 scholarship offers, but from what I've been told, Gonzaga is the team to beat.
J.P. Estrella, the 6-foot-11, 210-pound power forward from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., has talked about taking an official visit to Kansas, but as of late last week, nothing had been set. Estrella had originally planned to visit Duke last week, but ultimately decided to cancel that trip. Again, he told me that he's talked to Kansas about a visit, but nothing is set yet.
LeBron James, Jr., the 6-foot-2, 170-pound shooting guard from Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, Calif., has been mentioned as a Kansas target for the longest time, but nobody knows where things stand with the No. 57 ranked player in the class. I tried to get a few minutes with him at the Nike EYBL event here last month and it was never an option.
The staff, without question, would love to get TJ Power, the 6-foot-10, 210-pound power forward from Worcester (MA) Academy in Lawrence for an official visit, but I'm not sure if that's actually going to happen or not. Power, the No. 60 ranked player (for now) in the 2023 class has already visited Virginia, North Carolina, Duke, Iowa, and Notre Dame. As of Thursday afternoon, no additional visits had been set.
Don't be surprised if a few new names appear in the near future, and I've also reached out to Corey Chest, Jr., Justin McBride, and a few others to see where things stand.
