One thing that Trump is way ahead of other politicians and is playing the media like a drum is in getting them to follow the misdirection. Take, for instance, what has happened in the past few days. While the media is chasing after his dust-ups with Australia and his diplomatic breach with Iran, he approved a failed SEAL raid that military leaders said lacked sufficient intelligence and logistics and ultimately led to a SEALs death. There were also a number of moves by the Congress to overturn Obama-era regulations - such as protecting drinking water from pollution, requiring greater disclosure by oil and gas companies on foreign payments, and a gun background check required for social security recipients who have severe mental disabilities.
All of these - especially the failed military mission - would have likely invoked significant press. But Trumps ability to firehose the media with randomness (some worth reporting - such as his talk with Aus. - others not, such as some of his tweets) that they have largely gone unreported. It will be interesting to see if the media ever stops following the misdirection and starts looking for the act.
