Something that might be most exciting to me this upcoming season is that I think we will begin to see more of what Bowen really wants to do on defense. I think we will have numbers at different positions to allow for the flexibility to really put in schemes that Bowen would like to run
So when thinking about this, I keep going back to the NB spot and what we want to do with this position and do we have the guys to do this in the future or do we need to recruit guys for this...
Was recently watching some game clips of KJ Dillon vs Oklahoma. While WVU runs a 3x3 front versus our 4x2 front, they do run 5 DBs with 3 of them being safeties. They call their NB spot the SPUR position and like ours they want a hybrid LB/S, a guy that can lineup on the LOS or 15 yards back on any given play. As Deforest says in this article from a year ago, basically a playmaker that can cover the entire field.
Going back to the OU game clips, you see a lot of Dillon covering the slot guy, so think you could argue in this league that the SPUR is more of a S than LB:
Now a little bit contrary to my opening paragraph, as I do like the depth we have and think we see more from the defense that Bowen would like to run, but I do wonder if we have a guy that can play that NB spot right now. I can see the hybrid argument for Shaw as he is kind of like a hyrbid LB an S, but I am not sure he has the coverage skills to cover a slot receiver. Could this end up being the spot Tyrone Miller plays? Is this possible a spot that Ian Peterson could come in and play (aggressive against the run, speed to play CB)? Do we see them target a guy for this specific spot and he plays right away (perhaps someone like Gervarrius Owens)?
