He deliberately negotiated away an empire and a political/economic doctrine in the long term interest of peace, not only in the soon to be former Soviet Union, but globally. IMO, he will be remembered as a giant of the late 20th Century. He is said to have become disillusioned over where Putin has taken Russia and the world.
