The Big 12 has to be looking at this, right? This is the next big gold mine that can be a different maker for the teams and leagues that don't have inherent advantages like SEC and B1G (culture and geography). Netflix is investing $5B in original content. Amazon $3B. Yet, the league is bickering over Texas' $15M annual ESPN contract. Let that sink in...that's not even 1% of the amount Netflix is investing in the likes of House of Cards and The Ranch.
I mean, someone has to be waving a proposal saying "this is the next big thing...we can all be rich if we make this happen", right?
Network television is almost tapped out. Much ballyhoo was made of 1/2 of the Big 10's rights and Fox, but not much was mentioned that it looks as if the industry leader is bowing out of that discussion. To me, that's huge. That indicates something.
I mean, how much would Netflix not only love being able to get subscription revenue, but ad revenue too?
I know there is a ton of investment to establish broadcasting capability. "These Guys Have All The Fun" details that pretty well as far as ESPN getting started under similar circumstances.
I just feel like we're near the end of what we assumed was some kind of normal in 2010 (when Pac-12 tried to poach the Big 12 and started all of these crazy broadcast bidding wars) and a game changer is going to happen soon...I don't know why the Big 12 couldn't be the one to start, and give a lot of fans what they've enjoyed for many years with some security.
