  • absolutely awful offensive strategy persisted the whole half
    • has me very concerned that Beaty can't adjust soon enough with OC and HC duty b/c we moved the ball much better with a more vertical approach in second half
    • WTF was that play call on the goal line to get a safety...run behind a true and redshirt frosh??? Just stupid
    • no misdirection at all when we had a speed advantage
    • QB or RB draw? Ohio was so deep in the pocket that it was there
    • Willis gets one series after 3 passes, 1 drop
    • Is it not apparent the small WRs are going to struggle blocking in the bubble screens against d1a competition? If the WRs are standing still and catching the ball, easy targets so have them moving
    • move the QB out of the pocket to keep them from just sitting there
    • Cozart completely missed the one chance we had to go vertical with Quiv
    • We are struggling to get 2-3 yards so we call a lateral pass on 4th and 3 meaning Quiv has to go about 5-6 yards rather than 3 yards...either dogsh!t call or execution on that
    • do we only call for 1 receiver to get looked at? everything was nearly the first immediate pass on the chart
  • defensive scheme in front 6 (not really front 7 in a base nickel) stayed the same despite their QB prison banging us
    • we knew Ohio was strong on the OL so we decided to throw a 3 man front with Armstrong standing up and bouncing around, OFTEN putting him somewhere between the Ohio guards so he got mauled...Armstrong is an edge guy, he got destroyed in the middle
    • Commit to stop the run when you are getting killed, bring in a LB and play a true 43 front or something and let your secondary get beat
    • if you play a close press coverage, then why try to create so little pressure with more blitzes? We had no pressure and asked the DBs to cover longer
  • the effort as a whole was such an amazing turd. Scheme was a huge issue but tackling was just abysmal and so was blocking all round...the lack of dirty work resulted in very dirty results

Scheme and effort were drastically different in the 3rd quarter. We absolutely controlled the 3rd quarter. Problem is the defense was freaking exhausted and had no ability to get Ohio off the field by the 4th quarter and we looked clueless on offense again. We saw a much different look to the front 4 in the second half, I'm ready for the roaming stand up DE experiment to go away. Every issue we saw from the defense Saturday was there with the DL being in poor position vs Rhode Island...just that Rhode Island was beyond bad.

I'm very concerned about Beaty's ability to adjust before halftime. At some point, the OL has to be evaluated and different kids given a shot. Hughes and McCauley (if healthy) have experience, I feel we have workout warriors rather than going with the non flashy approach.
