Zenger set us back in a very bad way with the hiring of Weis. No way to sugar coat it. It was a very poorly thought out hire. I think Zenger panicked when there was no interest from serviceable coaches. I hate to say it but I lay the problem we are in now squarely at Zenger's feet. We couldn't afford another Gill disaster, and that is exactly what we got, and in many way worse, because of Weis's JUCO fiasco. And I have to say, Zenger was asleep at the wheel on the whole JC thing as well. He should have stepped in. It is one thing to bring in eligible JC players, but to bring in a bunch of players that were flakes and had issues is a totally other issue. I will say Zenger was very courageous in firing Weis midway through the season, because that truly was an indictment of Zenger himself.
With that said, anyone who thinks this isn't a five year rebuilding job is truly kidding themselves. But when you look at a school like Memphis and what they have to offer compared to KU, it is very easy to say that Beaty should be able to bring KU back to being competitive quite easily within five years, given his recruiting connections and coaching ability. Beaty's coaches are ten times better than Weis', easy to see that.
I truly believe this is our last chance to avoid playing in the Mountain West or a watered down version of the Big 12 without UT and OU. The only way the Big 12 survives as currently situated is if the college football playoff goes to 8 teams, which definitely could happen. Then I think the Big 12 is good.
The revolving coaching wheel at KU has caught up to us in an ultimate big way. Stay the course with Beaty and he will take us to the promised land. There is a lot at stake. We HAVE to give a coach time to rebuild. Now my biggest worry is Zenger gets canned when we get a new Chancellor. Then the new AD tries to bring in his guy. I really hope Self can step in and try to talk some sense into people and keep us going with Beaty if that happens.
