One of the early things of note with Coach Yenser is that he is not afraid to take on a project and seems to have a specific mold he looks for in his OTs. Looking through the guys he has offered so far combined with McCauley, Frazier, and to a lesser extent Durley (I think he may be a little bit bigger and more ready to contribute early) you are seeing a lot of guys in the 6' 5" 270 lbs range that more importantly can move really well. It looks like he is wanting to get these guys in here and build them and coach them up.
So that got me thinking about the next season or two. We already have a guy like that on our roster in Jordan Shelley-Smith. He is 6' 5" and was around 265lbs last year. So now my question is how quickly can Coach Yenser coach up a veteran like JSS?
Something I thought was interesting was this past year (or maybe it was the year before) he started a redshirt freshman at tackle for Cal. It should come as no surprise that this freshman was listed as something like 6' 5" 265 lbs in HS. By his RS FR year he was in the 290 lbs range and was a solid starter given his age.
Now talent level plays a role here, of which I don't know how JSS's talent compares to the guy at Cal, but using that as a barometer I think you could assume that means he would definitely have JSS ready to be a contributor for his senior year. That's a good thing with the likes of Larry Mazyck and Damon Martin graduating. Now can he get him ready for next year? That's something I am really curious about to hear if we hear any rumblings about him this offseason...
