Hey all,

On Thursday afternoon, Kansas head coach Bill Self conducted his weekly press conference to preview the Texas game and more. Self opened up by saying that he watched the Texas/TCU game last night at home. Self said TCU was unreal the first half and Texas was a lot better the second half. Like those of us that watched the game saw, Self added that TCU made enough plays to hold on down the stretch. Self said that he didn’t celebrate after Kansas won the Big 12 regular season championship outright last night. He said that he texted the team and his coaching staff and that, according to Self, was about it.

Self, without question, is happy that TCU won the game, which allowed Kansas to win the conference championship outright. Self won’t even consider resting the guys or changing up the lineup against Texas on Saturday. Self said the game in Austin is huge and there is still a lot to play for the moving forward. Self said if you have that attitude, you’re minimizing what’s most important. Self said KU is still playing to put themselves in the most favorable position come tournament time.

The Cam Martin medical redshirt isn’t official, according to Self, because he doesn’t believe they can make that call. That’s something that must be approved, according to Self, by the powers that be. Self said that “they” don’t make an official determination that he gets a medical redshirt. Martin, according to Self, has to apply for the medical redshirt and then a decision will be made. Self said Martin still isn’t healthy and has days where he can’t go. Self made it clear that Martin isn’t 100 percent healthy.

Self, when asked about Texas, said he felt Kansas played pretty well the first time around. Jalen Wilson had just two points, the bench came through and Self made it a point to mention Joe Yesufu and how well he played in that first meeting. Self added that it was a pretty smooth game, but Texas still scored 80 points in the loss. Not surprisingly, Self said Kansas must do a better job defensively this time around. Self said he expects the atmosphere on Saturday to be “turned up” and Kansas will have to be ready for a battle on the road.

From a roster standpoint, Self said he isn’t sure if any team matches up with Texas. Self said they’ve got 8 guys they can put on the court and basically all 8 can be starters. Self absolutely loves the roster.

Self, when asked about KJ Adams increasing his rebounding numbers, said it’s never been about effort. It's more him understanding the mindset to go after the ball. Self said KJ has done a great job of making sure his man doesn’t get the rebound.

Self, when asked to grade the performance of the team this season, said he’d give his squad an A-. He added that hopefully, KU’s best ball is still in front of them.

Self, when asked, said he feels like Jalen Wilson is Player of the Year in the Big 12. Added that he’s never been the type of guy to campaign for his guys to win an award in which every coach in the league votes. Still, Self believes that Wilson is the Player of the Year in the conference.

Self can’t vote for Jalen, so his feeling is that he should vote for the player he believes should be Player of the Year, if it's not Jalen, and not to vote for somebody that won’t be player of the year, to help Jalen.
