So, about the QB position...

From the past couple of weeks of fun, there are two main things I am hoping happens with the QB spot over the next year:

1.) I hope whoever is QB this year (avoiding the debate who should be it, we have had enough of that), that that guy has a really good season and will be back next year undoubtedly being the top option as I think we could all use a break from the QB battle debate

2.) I think we need to take a QB in the 2017 class

Focusing in this post on #2 (as again we have had enough debate about #1 recently), nothing has really changed on my opinion on the young QBs on the roster, although warming up a little bit to Tyriek Starks after reviewing his film. I still think as I have before if we are going with a Leach type air raid, Ryan Willis is easily the top guy IMO because he easily has the best arm of the guys we have. If we are going more with a Baylor type air raid (which I thought was the original plan), I think Stanley is the best option as I like his ability to make quick reads/decisions consistently and is capable of running the ball on designed plays fairly well. If we go to the JFF type offense, I think you can make a case for Starks as to me he looks like he is the best guy at throwing on the run and with his speed could be a problem to contain and plan for.

A beauty of the air raid is that a few minor tweaks here and there can change the dynamic of the offense to meet any of those three type of offenses mentioned above. Nothing new and that has been mentioned quite a bit on here. Even if Beaty does want to run the JFF type offense, but say Willis is the best option, I do agree the offense should be tweaked to fit what Willis does best to give us the best chance of a win.

I am going to stop there and not go any further about that little recap of things that have been discussed quite a bit before it devolves into a discussion of running Beaty wants versus running what's best. I am however going to assume that the goal is to run the JFF offense in the future regardless of what they do this next season.

If the goal going forward is to run the JFF Texas A&M Air Raid, then we need the tools to run that offense. Specifically focusing on the QB spot, that means a focus on guys that are pretty solid throwing on the run. Now guys like Willis and Stanley may be the kind of guys that can do that and we just don't know yet as they haven't been asked to do that a ton before, but judging from what they did out of HS I think guys like Starks and Haehn showed they are pretty comfortable throwing on the run. Also consider a side note, I don't think the guy has to be a incredibly fast running to be good at this - I think a guy like Reesing would excel in this offense with his ability to throw on the run.

So if we are going forward with this offense, we might only have a couple of guys that fit the mold of what they want. Again noting that this doesn't necessarily pertain to this season or even next season, as well as maybe Willis and/or Stanley could thrive in this type of offense, but focusing on the future I think it makes sense to then get another guy in the 2017 class that fits the mold of these guys that can throw on the run.

Mentioning this partly because I saw last night that Jaylon Mascorro has decommitted from Houston. He was my favorite QB that we offered before he committed there. He is a 6' 2" 220 lbs kid that reminds me a lot of Patrick Mahomes. He isn't a guy with the speed of a Starks or Stanley, but he is capable of running the ball (1200 yards rushing last year, but didn't go up against great competition). Has a great arm and does well throwing on the run. If we have a shot at him, I think it would be smart going after him or a guy similar to him...
