I printed out the just released KU football roster and looked it over. Here are some things that stood out to me: There are 90 names listed. 22 of them are walk-ons. 34 are from Texas, 18 from Kansas, 7 from Missouri, 6 from Florida, 5 from Illinois, and one or two from various other states. Of the 18 from Kansas, only SIX
are scholarship players. Beau Bell is now on scholarship, but he came as a walk-on. Last year, I compared the KSU roster with ours. They had 52 Kansas players on their roster and we had 23, I believe. This is a ridiculous situation and has to change. This is one reason (just one) that they assert that THEY are the true state university. We have to start signing more Kansas kids. I know the state doesn't produce that many Div I players, but we must get more of them, and I think Beaty and staff know this and are working on it. Power to them! (I know a few of you will say "I'd rather have a two star Texas kid than a four star Kansas kid," and that may be true once in a while, but if you think that always, you just don't get it.)
Another thing. We need to do a better job in surrounding states. We need to do a better job in Missouri. We need desperately to hit Oklahoma harder--we only have two from OK on our roster. Wow! Mangino hit that state pretty hard and got some good players. We do not have a single player from Colorado on our roster. With CU being down, and the number of KU alumni in that state, we should have at least a few from there. In short, we have to do a better job in state and in the surrounding state. I love out Texas recruiting, and that will probably be out bread and butter under Beaty but we have to do better close to home, too. Plus, we only have two kids from California on our roster, and we need more from there. (They are working on it.)
I think that Beaty and staff are working on this and power to them. But if there is a Kansas kid that is Div I material, we need to be all over him. KSU is killing us in this department. We will have some more Kansas kids coming in as walk-ons soon. Good for them. I hope some of them win scholarships. Thoughts?
