The biggest take-away as I am looking back over the game is the fact Memphis started seven drives in KU territory.
Technically it is eight but I don't count the pick six as a possession although the official stats do.
There is just no way a team where KU is, or for any matter most teams except a Bama, Ohio State, that can win games with their opponents starting games in that field position.
Also impressed with Memphis special teams. The kicker is one of the best in the nation although he pushed that one to the right and their punter was really good. The punter had two punts over 50 yards and five inside the 20.
One other thing the Memphis DC is crazy. That guy brings pressure from everywhere. I would like to see what they do when they face a mobile QB. They just pinned their ears back and came full steam all day knowing KU didn't have the threat of the QB running. On one play Cozart took off over the right side and showed some good speed and got 10 yards. If Cozart is still the guy moving forward I think he needs to have some run plays mixed in.
When you watch college football there are so many teams with mobile QB who can run. Go look at teams that are called Air Raid teams Texas A&M, Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, West Virginia, they all have QB who can run and get out of pressure.
Go look at Kingsbury who is from the old school Air Raid system and now what he is doing with Mahomes. Against Arizona State Mahomes had 11 carries for 53 yards. He led the team in both categories. Yesterday against La Tech Mahomes he ran 12 for 59 yards.
Then go look at Texas A&M where Trevor Knight has 28 rushes which is tied for second on his team and also in rushing yards for the season.
On the other hand look at the old school Air Raid like Cal and Washington State. Tony Franklin put in the Air Raid who was one of the original guys. Now it is being run by Jake Spavital who worked with Beaty at A&M. Cal rarely runs the QB. Webb ran it five times for two yards last night which most were scrambles. The week before he ran it three times for 0 yards.
Falk at Washington State ran it five times for 20 yards and five times for nine yards in his last two games.
You can see the difference in philosophy of running the QB. It is a catch 22 because if your OL can't run block are you putting the QB at more risk? Or by doing some run plays are you making the DC play honest and at least respecting the fact you could and might run the QB? Because if you do show the threat of doing it the DC has to keep someone in the box to account for it.
