Did anyone else see the article on Yahoo (I believe)? Could be the end of visiting bands.
The Lamar Cardinals will have to hum the school's fight song in their huddle Saturday because the university's marching band won't be going with them to Waco.
If the band went, Lamar would have to pay Baylor nearly $25,000 for stadium tickets.
That's because the gentleman's agreement that Big 12 band members would not be charged for tickets is over, according to a recent Houston Chronicle story.
The news broke this week when Texas Tech announced the University of Texas is charging members of the Red Raider Goin' Band $100 each for seats to the Thanksgiving Day football game on Nov. 26.
The Red Raider band numbers 600 members, which means Tech is going to have to cough up $60,000 for one game.
That's a lot of Guns Up to fork over.
Charging college bands to perform is not how the Southland Conference does business.
At Provost Umphrey Stadium, Lamar reserves a section without charge for the visiting team's band if officials know it is coming, said university spokesman Brian Sattler.
If the visitors' band doesn't accompany the team, Lamar simply puts the reserved seats up for regular ticket sales.
Because of the sticker shock for band members' tickets at Baylor, Sattler said, "We decided not to take the band."
Baylor University is paying Lamar $400,000 for today's football game, according to Athletics Director Jason Henderson.
Kickoff for today's game, which will be televised on FSN, is 6:30 p.m.
