Just an opinion but it looked today as tho the play calling was designed to protect Cozart. Other than the early pass to Taylor down the seam, and it was only a five to seven yard flip to him, I cannot recall a play where Cozart tried throw to the middle of the field. Was this by design? I think it was. The vast majority of his passes were short, quick and did not require a lot of scanning the defense to complete. I understand you can argue that is the way the offense is supposed to be run but it won't work against better defenses.
There is no question Cozart played his best game as QB at KU today, he came back from the fumble and played much better. His stats looked good. But the passing game has to be able to open up moving forward or he will get eaten alive. Look at the last drive. 50 seconds left and his first pass was a three yard hook that accomplished nothing and burned way to many seconds off the clock. I would love to know what the difference is between the yardage of the catch vs. YAC today. Cozart still has to prove he can read coverages and deliver an accurate ball on the intermediate and deep throws.
They burned Willis's shirt today for two throws. I think Cozart has a short leash and if he can't work the entire field then Willis plays. I will guarantee that Memphis plays press on the line of scrimmage with two safeties back and dares Cozart to put some depth on his throws. Hope he can show that he has improved in these areas.
