If people missed it, there was another police shooting, this time in Philadelphia. An African-American man with reported mental health issues was carrying a knife as he walked around the street outside his home. The man, Walter Wallace, was being talked to by his mother who was trying to get him to drop the knife. Reports are police showed up, when Wallace started to walk towards police, they pulled out their guns and killed him...in front of his mother.
Meanwhile, in Canada, police, exercising a search warrant, were shot at by a group of minors from their apartment. Rather than pretend they were in a Wyatt Earp reenactment, the officers retreated, regrouped, and were able to apprehend the kids without shooting a shot. In other words, they recognized they were dealing with youth and rather than shoot the kids, possibly killing them or killing an innocent bystander, they reassessed and addressed the situation in a more appropriate manner.
American police need to find a better way and Americans should demand more than a 'kill first, ask questions later' force.
