After he began in 2015 under former head coach Norm Chow, Cookus immediately brought the special teams’ ranking up. In 2014, the Warriors’ kickoff return team ranked 102nd in the nation. But with the direction of Cookus, UH jumped all the way up to the 59th spot in 2015, averaging 21.32 yards per return.

Cookus also instructed kicker Rigoberto Sanchez, who was pivotal to the replacement of former special teams’ star Scott Harding. With the combined efforts of Cookus coaching and Sanchez on the field, the Warriors ranked sixth nationally in net punting with an average of 41.51 yards a return; which was a big boost from previously ranking 10th.
