While we are beginning to walk down that tight rope on the scholarship situation, we are still in the OK area and not mortgaging the future...but we can also give ourselves some wiggle room with a little roster maneuvering

That being, we can redshirt some juniors or sophomore. Redshirting sophomores will end up being more of the impact on this, but redshirting some juniors can have a smoothing effect...we will see that in a minute.

So going through the roster, here is a list of scholarship sophomores and juniors that I think have a redshirt available:

SOPHOMORES

Matthew Boateng
Bobby Hartzog
Corey Avery
Kyron Watson
Derrick Neal
Darious Crawley
Joe Dineen
Junior Visinia

JUNIORS

Montell Cozart
Fish Smithson
Ke'aun Kinnear
Will Smith
Marnez Ogletree

The bottom line is that for every sophomore that redshirts, that adds one more roster spot we can add one more number to the roster. For instance, let's say we go through all of the analysis and as of right now assuming no redshirts the maximum number of scholarship guys (not counting walk ons) we can have in Year 3 of the Beaty era is 75 (actually think it is higher, but for arguments sake assume this is right). If we redshirt one sophomore, that number becomes 76. If we redshirt two sophomores, that number becomes 77.

Now if you redshirted say 5 sophomores, you wouldn't see that impact until the sophomore class graduates. If you also redshirt say 2 juniors, you see an impact of 2 when the junior class redshirts and then an impact of 3 when the sophomore class graduates. So the total impact is still 5, but it gets smoothed out over two classes by having both juniors and sophomores redshirt.

But I think that should be the goal - redshirt at least 2 juniors and at least 5 sophomores. One of the beauties about this is that you can spare a freshman at the expense of saving the roster.

Let's say the staff feels we are low on WR numbers, but want to redshirt Bobby Hartzog and Derrick Neal. You can burn the shirt of a guy like Chase Harrell at the expense of these two because in the end in won't impact the numbers since we have very few redshirt freshman on the team.

The staff would have to be creative, but I think it would be pretty huge if we can redshirt a few juniors and sophomores as that would help the roster situation from a numbers view some...
