At the moment it's still very unclear that anyone could lead this program on the same level Self has, even after the past 2 disappointing seasons. Every elite coach has ups and downs and makes mistakes. Things don't always go as planned in any profession even for the best. He is likely showing some signs that he's past his prime, but so is Andy Reid and he continues to have massive success because he's surrounded himself with a great staff and some guy named Kermit the frog who's pretty good.

My point is, Self at 80% of what he was at his peak, which I believe was arguably between 2014 and 2023, before the health issues is still better than most of the coaches out there. Especially if he surrounded himself with better staff, and a guy who's supremely gifted like Peterson who could be a 1 year close equivalent to the Mahomes effect that Andy Reid has had.

With that said, if it becomes very obvious that his coaching starts to fall off a cliff and we need to make some calls, who's some of the names at the top of your list?

Mine might be in no particular order:

1)Nate Oats (rumors he might actually entertain KU, but take that with a massive grain of salt)

2)TJ Otzelberger (if he's the competitor I think he is, there's no bigger challenge than trying to take the reigns from HOF coach Self at KU)

3) Todd Golden (although I'd like to see more proof)

4) Chris Beard would have been the shoe in but he now has baggage. Do we let that die down over Selfs final years and take a chance with him anyway?

5) Grant Mccasland? I know he doesn't have a huge sample size but I'm intrigued to monitor him

6) Darian Devries? Again, would like a larger sample size but we've got a few years yet hopefully.

7) Matt Painter.

8) Buzz Williams

9) Tommy Lloyd

10) Pat Kelsey

Who else should we look at?

A few years ago I would have said that the cupboard was bare as far as finding a solid replacement for Self but now I think there are some guys worth looking at. There are other more obvious older guys we could target butnim trying to keep it under 55 so they would in theory be here for at least a decade or so..
