1. Selden is just not very good. And, today, he couldn't guard anyone. Seems like a great teammate, but he has no real game. He can get hot, but only 3-4 times in the season...He needs to come off the bench next year. Graham gets his starting spot.
2. Perry was trying to do too much...often just threw it up in the general direction of the hoop too often. As a result, many wasted possessions in the first half.
3. Hunter Mickelson should have played significant minutes (in this game and every since Alexander went bench)...
4. Greene should never play against a good perimeter man defense (like today). He simply isn't gifted/quick enough to get himself open...and, as boot, he can't guard a lick. Play him against soft zones like NMex.St.
5. We need to get recruit some players with "heart". The entire team is to phlegmatic, stoic, unexciteable. I thought Tarik Black was a great add last year because he brought the fire that this team lacks all across the board. Look for that kind of grit as he recruits henceforth.
6. Self has to be far more willing to bench is "favs"...like Nadir and, now, Selden.
7. The one and done has not been good to us. Perhaps its time to re-think that strategy. With "program players", and with our program and our home court advantage, we could be very salty year after year. Put Wichita State's team in Allen Fieldhouse, with the advantages of our program, and they probably win a national title and ring up a couple Final 4s with this generation of players. My suggestion would be to take the very best of the 25-50 ranked guys...not the very cream. Take 3 or so of them each year. And, I think the players in that ranking group would die to come to KU, so we should be able to get most of them.
This loss was embarrassing and it was predictable. I hope some good comes from it and the necessary, foundational changes we need to make are made.
