Players are no longer under rookie contract restrictions 4 years post high school graduation.
Here is my thought process:
- When you hear of why players leave early, some of it is the first contract money. However, a decent number of guys it is to start the clock for the second contract which is much more favorable for the player.
- Players that want to make more than rookie contracts can play international for longer and develop instead of college.
- Think players that like college and feel like they can still develop there will have more incentive to stay.
Interested to see this get shot up. International players add a unique twist but not educated enough to know the full impact.
Other items I would change are forcing a year of college & players could be drafted but not make the jump to the NBA (draft expanded to 3 rounds). Salary cap would probably need to be adjusted but player contracts are about to become more ludicrous in the near future.
