Everybody should visit Morgantown at least once in their life. The place is crowded and congested and is known as Morganpit or Morganhole.
That being said, my Son and I took the 2 hour drive there, we bought good seats ($200 apiece), and sat at the 40 yard line , row 22, behind the WVU bench.
I was amazed and discouraged by what we took in over the next 6 hours.
In the 1st half, that we lost 7-14, the one common theme was poor KU offensive line pocket pass protection. There were numerous times when a WVU pass rusher found an open lane, and forced Jalon to scramble and run for his life. This happened about 6-8 times!
In the 2nd half, we play really well in the 3rd quarter, and early in the 4th quarter we have 4th and 2 near midfield when the lightning strikes! They review the Kardell sideline catch but confirm he was out of bounds. We head into an almost 2 hour delay. Beer Sales cease at the end of the 3rd quarter, so half the drunk WVU fans head to the exits.
The weather delay feels like an eternity, and when play resumes (KU had taken a 5 yard delay of game penalty) we punt. We pin them back and we get a 3 and out stop! We get the ball with good field position and face another 4th and 2 at their 45, and this time KU gambles and goes for it! We opt for the run option play (which by the way worked all day long) where we jab step one way and then reverse direction and picked up the first down. Shortly after that we ran the reverse to Grimm (which by the way also worked the few times we tried it) for the TD that made it 28-17 KU! We have the Momentum!
The WVU crowd remaining (about half) were ready to fire Neal Brown again with less than 6 minutes to go. WVU blew a 10 point lead at Pitt last week. WVU stays aggressive and marches right down the field, Greene is really on target. Then, Wheeler gets hurt, and misses a play. KU puts a limping Wheeler back in the game, he is noticeably limping back after every play. WVU takes advantage with a tight end flat pass (blown coverage) to make it 23-28. They the run a prayer reverse lateral/option pass play that somehow worked! 28-25 KU, <3 minutes to go).
Trevor Wilson returns the kick and gets smacked down at the 20. We run the ball for 3 yards. We then run the ball for 3 more yards. 3rd and 6 at our 26, WVU takes a timeout. The game is on the line, and KU really needs a first down. KU runs the ball off tackle and is stuffed for no gain. WVU calls 2nd timeout, still over 2 minutes to play, and we have to punt.
You all know the rest of the story, Greene marches them down again (he played great), they score to go up 32-28. We respond with a long pass to Arnold. But then with 15 seconds left, a blind side strip sack forces Jalon to fumble. Jalon actually played a good game. But Greene played even a better game.
As the clock ran out, Greene ran over to Cobee Bryant and extended his hand in a display of sportsmanship. They shook hands but you could tell by body language Bryant was upset with the loss. The Mountaineer fans sang "Country Roads" on the way out. KU Fans were devastated, it was a long ride home.
