Mike Norvell held his press conference today after Memphis was coming off a bye week. I listened to the press conference and here are some things he had to say about this week's game.

On his team off a bye week:

I thought they were very much you are in their focus and we really tried to have a great attention to detail and improvement as a football team. I really liked how the guys approached our preparation.

Comment about KU in the beginning of his press conference

This week we have a power five opponent coming into town. Kansas is a much improved football team from where they have been. They are going into their second year with their coaching staff. They started off the first game and had a great victory, scored a lot of points.

This last week they had a little setback. They turned the ball over and had a couple self inflicted mistakes and came up on the short end. We know they’re going to come into our place with a great intensity and focus on improving. We know we have a tremendous challenge at hand. We’re excited about this week and getting back out there on the field at the Liberty Bowl.

On getting extra time to prepare for KU:

Most early opponents you’re going to have a good beat on. We spent a lot of time this summer studying Kansas as well as our first three or four opponents. We use that time to put together a preliminary game plan.

We got an introduction to Kansas on Thursday. Spent a little more time with our scouts to show some of their base looks.

What did he see from Kansas last week:

Ohio had a great game plan for what they were trying to accomplish with running the football. I think there were a couple of mistakes if you listen to the Kansas coaching staff. There were a couple plays they wish they could’ve had back.

This Kansas team we are playing is an improved football team. Their talented up on the defensive front. They have a lot a true sophomores that are playing with them. Last year they played a lot of young players and some of them got that experience through playing last season.

They came out in game one and were extremely dominant. In game two there were a couple setbacks. When you look at it I think they had four turnovers with two muffed punts, a blocked punt, and an interception. That put their defense in a tough situation. I know that’s something that they are working to get corrected. This is a talented group that is coming in. Our main thing is we have to focus on our scheme, personnel in game plan but we have to go out and execute..

I can tell you this is going to be a great game. It will be one with two quality teams going against each other. One is coming off a game they didn’t feel like they played to the best of their ability and we know we’re going to get their best shot.
