Something we unfortunately know about all too much from the past few years is what bad coaching and inconsistency in coaching looks like. When we typically talk about that, some examples I can think of is needing offensive scheme consistency, OL coaching consistency, and things like that, but think this could apply to special teams as well.
And of all the guys on the team this could possibly have the biggest impact on, I think Matthew Wyman would be near or at the top of this list.
Wyman didn't really start kicking until he was in college. Since he has joined the team, he has had a ton of different special teams coaches. I am not quite sure on the specifics of who was his coach under Weis, but remember Blasko was initially ST coach, then ST duties were split among different coaches, then Hyman came here under Beaty, and now he has Joe DeForest. He has seen quite a bit of turnover in the ST coaching department since he has been here. For a guy that has very little kicking experience before getting here, I think that plays a huge part in his development, or lack thereof.
We know Wyman has a leg. He kicked a 65 yarder in front of fans in last year's open practice. He kicked a 52 yarder his freshman year and 51 yarder his junior year. So leg isn't the problem, it is all about consistency. He has made 50%, 60%, and 50% of his FGs his three seasons here.
So the question I am curious about, can these consistency issues be fixed in one year? I don't know, but am really curious to see what DeForest can do to help that.
