With fall camp and a dead period things have been somewhat slow but there are a couple targets still in the mix and here is an update and thoughts where recruiting stands.
First off, I expect the first three weeks of September to be slow. The first two home games are on a Friday night, so I don’t anticipate many recruits showing up for those games. The Illinois game would be a great atmosphere but unless a recruit plays on Thursday night, they won’t be able to make it.
The third week is on the road making the Sept. 23 game vs BYU the first game where recruits will show up. That also takes the staff off the road because with a Saturday game they would go out and watch local games on a Friday night.
I’m going to start with Michael Boganowski. In July I thought his recruiting would be cut and dry. He would take unofficial visits to KU, KSU, and OU and decide soon after. But my thinking is out the window.
After talking with Boganowski I really don’t think he knows where he is going. Sometimes a recruit won’t announce his school, but they know deep down where he is going. I don’t think he does. The thing to watch here is if he brings more schools in. There is a chance he could visit Florida State.
He told me if his recruiting goes into the season then the possibility exists USC could get a look. Then things get complicated. The people I have talked to seem to think he stays closer to home, meaning the Kansas schools or Oklahoma.
I know Kansas is a player. I had some people tell me when he had to back out of his first scheduled unofficial visit, he would drop KU. But he did the opposite, he rescheduled his trip and took it on the last day possible before the dead period.
If he wasn’t interested in KU, he would have just moved on and not taken the visit. He told me he isn’t clear on what he wants to do, but after the unofficials he started to get a better idea. I think this all comes down to early September. If he doesn’t have a decision by then it will get interesting. He told me he might do more unofficial visits for games if that’s the case.
------------
I’m keeping a close eye on BJ Canady. I’ve talked to him several times and right now he wants to take a quiet approach to recruiting.
He told me he doesn’t want any stories written about him because he wants his film to do the talking. He said there has been communication with the KU staff.
I know the staff wants to see what he does on film his senior season coming off his surgery.
If he can come out and show there are no issues I expect schools to warm up to him again. Everyone has taken a wait and see approach. I’m rooting for him. He’s a good kid and has always been polite to talk with.
Not sure if everyone knows his story but here is Withers talking with him this summer about his injury.
-------------
The film for the beginning of the season will also be a key time for OL Garret Rutledge. I think KU was close to offering him when he visited at the end of July. He has been on campus several times. Like Canady he is coming off an injury that didn’t leave a lot of junior film.
He’s had a good summer and looked good at KU’s camp.
He said his visit in July was good and he got to see more of the campus and meet with Fuchs and Leipold. He said Fuchs wants to see how he does in his first few games. If he plays well, I think the Jayhawks could offer.
Rutledge told me he is hearing from KU, KSU, and Iowa State and I will track how things are going with him.
