The KS prisons are way too full of first time nonviolent drug offenders. Both will support a major overhaul of sentencing laws and expanded treatment options. Neither wants more money spent on new prisons and both think putting first time nonviolent drug offenders in prison doesn’t make any sense as addiction is punished, not treated. South Dakota went this route a few years ago under a fiscally conservative R governor who didn’t want to spend any more money on prisons. It works. It will work in Kansas or anywhere else. I love when the political poles agree on something important that needs to be done and then go about doing it. Thoughts?
