I do not include Turner Gill or Charlie Weis in the discussion because both were inexplicable hires who never had an iota of chance at success at KU. However, while trying to gain some historical perspective on what was a somewhat disappointing Beatty debut, I looked up the stats from the debut of the Jayhawk's last successful coach Mark Mangino. Mangino debuted on August 31, 2002 at Iowa St. ISU won the game 45-3. KU was outgained on the day 505 yards to approximately 160 yards. KU lost the turnover margin 3-1. Zach Dyer was the starting quarterback. Yes, ISU is a BCS program and SDSU is not. But, they are not and were not Alabama either. The point is that today we made the first step in the journey of a thousand miles. I still believe that David Beatty has the chance to be the next successful coach at KU, and he still may be starting from a slightly better place than Mangino. We have a lot of issues to solve, and a lot of positions to recruit. But in the end, today doesn't really mean that much. Perspective, my friends.
