LAWRENCE Kansas coach David Beaty confirmed that sophomore offensive lineman Joey Bloomfield was retiring from football for health reasons after battling concussion-related issues during his time in the program.

On Wednesday, Beaty announced that Bloomfield was “retiring” from football while remaining in the program in an off-field capacity. On Thursday, the first day of fall camp, Beaty praised Bloomfield for making a tough decision.

“Joey is a great kid,” Beaty said. “My heart goes out to him. I’ve got to give him credit, because he is a very courageous guy.”

Bloomfield became the second Kansas player to retire from football for concussion-related issues this offseason. Linebacker Jake Love previously announced his retirement earlier this summer.
