So here I will provide an in depth analysis of the first 2 drives based off my assumptions on who should be doing what. Hopefully I'll have time to get through all the drives throughout the week. Here we go...
Starts off the game with a counter to the left. Against 6 in the box, it’s not an ideal play call, but if we get a hat on a hat, the only unaccounted for player is the backside LB, and he probably gets sealed in and can’t make the play:
However, our LG is standing straight up and gets pushed back a full yard and a half, and our RG isn’t athletic enough to get around it (physical mistake on LG and RG) It also looks like that we have an option to pass it to number 4 at the bottom if there is 6 in the box so that is a mental mistake by Cozart:
Since our RG got held up by the LG, he is a step behind the LB, and his head is on the wrong side. Notice how we are making contact with the LB at the original line of scrimmage. We should be at least a yard/two down field, but because of the mishap between the LG and RG we are behind. Lastly, notice that because it looks like number 4 was originally a read play, he has no chance to make his block at this point:
Those two guys end up making the tackle for a 2 yard gain instead of a 6 yard gain if any of the three things happen: LG doesn’t get pushed back, RG gets more depth on his pull, Cozart throws to number 4 since there’s 6 in the box:
Next play is the same play, but to the right. Notice this time the LB is out of the box so it should be a much better play:
Starts off good with our RG not getting pushed back and are LG making it around clean so we’re looking like a good gain:
However, Montell decides to throw it out to the WR instead of hand it off:
Number 1 misses his block/has a bad angle, but even if he gets the block we don’t pick up more than a few because of a bad read by Montell (mental mistake for Cozart, physical mistake for Quiv):
So now we’re doing to a 3rd and 11. The Mike LB is showing blitz, and we’re going to have a T, E stunt at the bottom. The T, E stunt is what is going to get us protection wise. It’s hard enough to pick up when you have a guard and tackle that have worked together for a couple years, but it’s near impossible when they just started working together this week. I expect a lot of time is going to be spent working on these stunts because we’re going to see tons of it in the big 12:
The key part about picking up twists is that the guard and tackle have to stay on the same level and have to stay square to the line. As you can see here, our RG gets blown up (because he’s standing straight up), and our LT is lunging forward (physical mistake for LT and LG). Right here there is no chance to have a clean pass off, so you just have to stay with your guy. Also notice at the top how our RG and RT are on the same level and square to the line so they easily pass off their twist (as well as the twist up top is pretty awful):
Pocket doesn’t end up being too terrible though, as Cozart can still see the field and step up since the LT and LG stayed with their guy:
No one is open though (from what we can tell on TV at least) so Montell takes off, but only picks up 5 yards:
So after drive 1 by my grading we have these things that caused us to go 3 & our:
With that being said, all the physical mistakes are fixable.
