Drive 1
First play - We struggled with getting guys to the ground and having lots of tipped passes/hits on the QB in previous games. Here we hit them in the knee/thigh for good knockdowns. Not only does this make for an easy throw and catch, but it greatly slows down the pass rush later on in the game.
Nobody is hitting feet, they’re all hitting knee/thigh which is what you want to see:
Easy window to start Willis off with a 6-yard pass:
Play 2 – Another intentional quick pass. You can tell because the OL is cutting again. What I want you to notice is look at the first play, both DE’s are 2/3 yards up the field and the DTs are 1/2 yards when we start to cut, but on this play they haven’t even crossed the line of scrimmage. Nothing slows down a pass rush then getting your knees taken out constantly:
Willis throws it quickly to the RB, and here it looks like we may get 5 yards or even more if the RB can make one guy miss:
But for how good of a receiver Quiv is, he’s an awful blocker. He gets driven back 5 yards, so we only get two yards instead of 5+. Physical mistake Quiv:
Now we get to see our short yardage play with a full back. Here’s how the play should be blocked. We’ve got one guy we can’t account for (LB with dreads), but the RB just has to keep it play side or beat him for one yard:
We get a 1 yard push from the C/RG which is what’s going to give us the first down. Would like the LG to be more square (his guy makes the tackle), but he was at a disadvantage because to start with because his guy was inside of him so I won’t count off.
What I do like is the C and RG have pushed their DL back into the LB 2 yards down field on a 3rd and 1. That hadn’t been happening in previous games, and allowed the momentum of the RB to carry the LG's guy for the yard:
First pass protection (that wasn’t a cut). Pocket is deep and wide giving Willis a wide open lane to throw the ball. Easy 5 yards:
Adeniji does need to be careful though as he overset a little and if Willis hadn’t thrown the quick 5 yarder he may have given up a QB hit/sack:
Next play is a little stunt we like to call El Diablo because it is very hard to pick up. The good thing about it though is that it takes forever to run, so if we throw a quick pass then it negates the stunt:
If anyone remembers the Memphis game, we had real problems picking up DL stunts because our OL weren’t staying on the same level. Here however, all the OL are on the same level so we actually get this picked up:
And Willis gets the ball out quickly so the stunt has no chance of being successful and TCU’s All American DE is just sitting out in no man's land:
And it’s a good throw for 6 yards:
