I have seen this or a variation of this a few times, which of course is better than the latter, but how many people really mean this when they say it?
I am not talking from a view of wanting KU to be successful, as we all want that regardless of who the coach is, but how many people really mean it when they say they want Coach Beaty to succeed? To me, to really mean this goes beyond just saying it but actually making a commitment to this statement, both fans and boosters, from a support view. Support can be a number of things - from going to events, from staying at games, from forking over more money...
Why I ask at that is I have been thinking about all the positive reviews we have been hearing in just a couple of months about Coach Beaty. Now you always hear positive reviews whenever a new coach is initially here, but everything so far seems sincere. Coach Beaty is the type of guy we want at Kansas and we want him here a long time (as long as he wins of course, we will get to that in a minute)...
So if you want the guy here and to succeed, then I think that means you have to support the guy with things more than just saying it. Thinking about this from the booster level, we have heard several times on here that the boosters like him and we have seen him hanging out at places like Sporting KC with the Illig family. Think about the past few coaches we have had. We have heard Weis didn't mesh well with the boosters. Not sure about Gill, but if the boosters liked him a lot I doubt he would have been pushed out after two years. Not sure about Mangino, but there have been some who have said he was hard-headed (nothing wrong with that) which doesn't always translate well to boosters. So if there is a guy in place that the boosters genuinely like, given the past few coaches we have had, wouldn't it make sense for them to step up and give Coach Beaty what he needs to be successful?
From the fans view, I know it has sucked going to games lately. Some positives, but for the most part, it has been more taxing and feeling like an obligation to go than going to enjoy the game. But as they say, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. I think of Iowa State, who hasn't been great at football lately either, but their fans show up and support that football team every week. Surely we can step up the same as them right? If you like Beaty wouldn't it make sense to stick with the guy even when the going is tough initially? We know Lawrence is a beautiful place and we know this staff can recruit, so if we do our parts and show up to games, that makes it even easier for Beaty to sell this program, which makes it easier for him to turn this ship around.
I know at the end of the day, it will boils down to wins. I know that Coach Beaty could be the nicest guy in the world, but if he doesn't win, then it won't work here and some will want to see wins before committing to the program, both from the fans views and the boosters view. But I think it is an opportunity to be progressive here. We like this guy. We want him to succeed. I think it is time for fans and boosters to back these claims up and show how much they really want him to turn this thing around...
