Going through the internet, and I came across this article.
The 4 main schools of the spread offense
While this is Beaty's 2nd year, the offense should feel like a completely new year with a new version, basically Year 1, which is exciting and somewhat disappointing/worrisome at the same time.
The 4 main schools of the spread offense
- Papa Air Raid - the original; Kentucky with Hal Mumme and Tech with Mike Leach
- Spread Option - Rich Rod at West Virginia, current Ole Miss and Oregon
- Smashmouth Spread - current Auburn, Baylor, and Ohio State
- Pro Style Spread - Alabama under Lane Kiffin

- Exciting: we all agree that last year's offense did not infuse many positive feelings within the Anderson Complex and fanbase. The main positive feelings come from the fact that we see some nice primary and secondary puzzle pieces (current KU players, 2016 commits, and ideal 2017 recruits with KU offer) that complement each other. Based on the limited interviews with offensive players, positive words are being used to describe the new offense. In addition, we all know that roster number situation. Other than RB, we have many returning players who have on-field experience in a version of the spread offense. As long as the offense does not have any many crucial, multiple games to season long injuries, that experience plays nicely for a more productive offense.
- Disappointing/worrisome: The Big 12 is essentially a spread offense league; our offense, with its somewhat limited depth chart, will get figured out, and the opposing defenses with a plethora of on-field experience will give us problems. But the biggest thing that I worry about is the influence of Beaty's offense, Texas A&M under Sumlin. Beaty was led by 3 different OCs, who each had a different flavor. The first two years were more successful, because of players brought in by the previous staff, led by Mike Sherman. With young players like Johnny Manziel and Mike Evans, along with seasoned JRs and SRs, Kingsbury had the ultimate field day. The other OCs were not as successful. How much from each OC will Beaty bring to his version? In addition, we know that he will incorporate his own flavor into the mix, which is unknown.
