The fake spygate story is a perfect example of how the right wing is protecting Trump's worst impusles.
A disreputable news source (Gatway Pundit) concocts a story that the FBI spied on the Trump campaign for political purposes to monitor its actions. Trump takes that story, twists it into they placed a spy in his campaign, and sends out scathing tweets. Fox and Nunes pick it up and try to run cover for him.
In a normal situation, the press would ask for evidence, and finding as much evidence as Trump's birther, wiretap, etc. BS, call him out and move on. But instead, because of the right's ability to coalesce, we now are having briefings with members of Congress, Fox is talking about it 24/7, and it's coming off like a real story - all despite lacking a shred of evidence to support their claims.
Don't forget that in their effort to protect the president, they outed a confidential source of information for the FBI. That was something just a few short years ago was a major scandal in and of itself (Plame), but given the massive number of scandals around Trump it's not even talked about as a side dish here.
Trump makes up a scandal, Fox runs with it trying to give it credibility, Nunes launches investigations and hounds our intelligence agencies for information he doesn't need, which leads to Trump tweeting Fox stories and Nunes BS to make it all seem legit. Lather, rinse, repeat.
At least Trump has that Nobel Prize he can fall back on for his skillful handling of North Korea.
