Forty years ago the then powerful Soviet army left Afghanistan with its tail between its legs. Defeated by a third world ragtag army. Fast forward to 2021 As Americans scramble to leave Afghanistan in the face of a rapidly advancing terrorist Taliban army. Our hubris blinded us (and the Soviets) to a fact long recognized by non military experts - Afghanistan is a sinkhole for invading armies. The Biden Administration will try to make the best of this mess. And hopefully we learn that attempting to be a world policeman isn’t a winning job. The justifiable killing of Osama didn’t need a two decades attempt to recast Afghanistan into something it is not going to be.
