At Big 12 media day in July Beaty said Cozart has the inside track. He said it the practice before media day. He said it at media day.
Then last week he sounded like the race tightened. Today Beaty said they just haven't seen the separation they need to make any decisions. Before camp started Beaty said they wanted to make a decision quick and believed they would know early in camp.
The language has changed from Beaty in the last two to three weeks. He no longer says Cozart has the inside track. He said there isn't separation which means so far in camp nobody is jumping up and grabbing the job. There is always the chance a quarterback has taken the lead but they just want to make sure.
Beaty said today they haven't even been in camp two weeks. It was odd timing because they started on a Thursday not Monday. So the calendar is a bit off.
Cozart took the offense on a 12-play drive for a touchdown to start the scrimmage on Saturday. Beaty said he liked the way Cozart managed the team early in the scrimmage.
For some reason I keep having flashbacks to the fall camp of 2007-2008. The coaches changed the offense going to a spread. Todd Reesing and Kerry Meier were locked in a tight battle. After spring football of 2007 Meier still had the edge. I remember sitting there with Mangino when he said they were going with Reesing about two weeks before the first game. It surprised some people.
I still recall private conversations with people who told me it was difficult to go with Reesing because he just wasn't a "practice" quarterback. He was shorter. He couldn't see over the line. He didn't have a cannon for an arm. In 7-on-7 he didn't "wow" people. But once they went live and did the scrimmages he always got the job done.
It has been a while since KU has gone into a season where you don't have a strong grasp who will be quarterback. Or even the back-up for that matter. I felt early on it was Cozart's job. But Beaty's voice and body language is different when talking about the race. Maybe the job is Cozart's and Beaty is a helluva poker player. I think this battle is closer internally than it was when camp started.
Go to the 5:00 mark and watch Beaty's body language when asked about how close he is to naming a quarterback. He sure doesn't look someone has the inside track right now.
