Good read.

I can't tell you how many private conversations I have had with a coach and a past game comes up. And then a certain big play. Then I get a description from a coach who says what the call was and how it went wrong. And it blows me away. There have been some times I go back and watch the play and the coach was 100% correct.

I have had times where coaches have told me on a big return special teams gave up because an audible was called and the punt call changed but the gunner didn't recognize and went to the wrong coverage area.

Or a blitz was called and two LBs filled the same hole and if the other LB would have taken his correct gap he would have been right in position to make the play. It is interesting to hear behind the scenes talk dissecting a play and hear how one little mistake can doom a play.

One of the best I ever heard from a coach was back when Ron Prince was the HC coach at KSU. A coach told me the defense was so poorly schemed it was hard to call the offensive plays. Because you could call the right play but the KSU defense might actually be in the wrong place and stop the play. I was told there were so many guys out of position and guys that filled the wrong gaps they might actually mess up their assignments but blow your play up because they were in the right spot on accident.
