At basically any place when there is coaching turnover, there is going to be an adjustment period. Now new coaches can do better than the previous coaches right out of the gate, but it usually means that coach has either inherited a good group of kids, the team wasn't that bad the previous year, the new coach did a great job recruiting in one year before the season started, and/or that guy is just a good coach. But the majority of the time when a coach walks into a situation where there isn't a lot returning and the team didn't do well the previous season, it makes for a long upcoming season.

So let's look at what Everett Withers inherited when he took the Texas State job...

Instead of looking at the entire team, I am really just interested in the skill position guys. Now he did return a decent QB who averaged 200 yards per game last year...but that's about it. Not counting QB runs, he returned only 22% of the teams rushing yards from the previous season. Then there is receiver - he returned less than 4% of the teams receiving yards from the previous season, noting the only returning receivers were a couple of RBs and a TE who caught one pass last year - not a single leading returning WR that caught a pass last year. All of this from a 3 win team last year...

Yet Texas State managed to throw for 440 yards on them - that's not good Ohio. Look at the teams leading receivers from this past game for TSU:

Eric Luna - sat out last year after transferring from a D2 school
Elijah King - JUCO transfer
Gabe Schrade - TE who caught one pass last year
Tyler Watts - caught one punt for 0 yards last year, his only stat from last year
Stedman Mayberry - backup RB last year turned starting RB this year
Thurman Morbley - true freshman WR
Tyler Jones - starting QB
Lumi Kana - backup kicker
LG Williams - backup QB (also listed WR) who is a RS FR
Jericho Worrell - JUCO RB transfer

That's not exactly a killer receiving lineup...

If you look at the offensive numbers from this game and last year, note that TSU scored 38 points in regulation. Last year, TSU only scored that many points or more twice - once against a D1AA team and then once against a decent USM team. So if I was Ohio, I would be concerned that this brand new coaching staff and relatively inexperienced group of receivers put up those numbers on their defense...

It's early, but I got a good feeling about this game. We should be able to put up some points on them...
